Manchester United squeeze past Southampton 'Ferguson praises Chicarito'

Image
Chicharito drew special praise from Sir Alex Ferguson after booking Manchester United's place in the fifth round of the FA Cup with a trademark finish to sink a plucky Southampton. Behind at the break to a thumping Richard Chaplow drive, United silenced the St Mary’s crowd in the second half with goals from Michael Owen and the Mexican youngster. Hernandez helped dig United out of hole at Bloomfield Road on Tuesday and rounded his week off by grabbing a first ever FA Cup goal 14 minutes from time. Ferguson told MUTV : "He's only had one chance and he's scored - one chance, one goal is a tremendous ratio. "He has great feet in and around the box and gets his shots away quickly with hardly any backlift.” The 22-year-old has now scored four goals in just six games and offers the side more than just goals according to his manager. "His workrate is fantastic and he's always on the move. We probably we didn't find enough space for him at times,

FA Cup : Southampton 1 : Manutd 2 'Terrific Owen'

Image
Manchester United almost freeze up to the hard determintaion of southhampton team. But in late stage of the game, javier hernandez and michael owen produce the killer touch after Sir Alex bring in Nani and the far most experience Ryan giggs. Ferguson said: ' Owen was terrific , - he showed a lot of composure to score. With Hernandez it's one chance, one goal. His work-rate is fantastic, he's always on the move. Sometimes we don't find enough space for him. 'He's scored in every competition, he's got great feet, he has shots, hopefully he will continue to improve. I'm sure he will.' A delighted Owen claimed Southampton had run out of steam because they could not live with United's quality. The forward, whose headed equaliser on 65 minutes showed his predatory instincts of old, said: 'They played well and they are flying high in their division but inevitably the better quality shone through. 'It's not fitness, it's the fact that

Patrice Evra said: "we deserve the point" at white hart lane..

Image
“You need to be honest,” Evra told MUTV. “It was a good point because Tottenham played very well. It’s not easy to come to Tottenham and win so I think this is a good point. Although Patrice Evra insists United went to White Hart Lane to win, the Frenchman was pleased to leave with a point. The Reds and Tottenham Hotspur played out an entertaining 0-0 draw on Sunday afternoon, with the home side creating more chances but United creating the better ones. Twice Heurelho Gomes was forced into full-length saves from Wayne Rooney shots, while Edwin van der Sar barely broke sweat at the other end. But while Spurs struggled to make an impact in the final third, they bossed the midfield for long periods and generally looked the most likely side to score.

Sir Alex Salutes his side "Back four"

Image
With Nemanja Vidic and Rio Ferdinand outstanding in the centre of defence, aided and abetted by full-backs Rafael and Patrice Evra, plus defensive midfielder Michael Carrick, Edwin van der Sar scarcely had a shot to save. Sir Alex Ferguson was highly satisfied to depart White Hart Lane with a valuable point, and quickly heaped praise on the manner with which his side kept Tottenham at arm’s length throughout. “It was a tough game,” Sir Alex told Sky Sports. “ Tottenham are in great form but they really didn’t make many chances against us. We take credit for that. I thought our defenders were particularly good. Defensively we kept our nerve. “They never really troubled us. Considering the goals they’ve scored, at home particularly, and the performances they’ve shown at home, I think we can take real credit for that. “I thought we were a bit careless with our use of the ball, particularly in the period just before half-time and in periods of the second half, but it’s a

Why Carrick said: Spurs a 'major threat'

Image
Michael Carrick United’s unbeaten league run will be put on the line on Sunday against ‘the best Spurs team we’ve seen for a while’, according to Michael Carrick. The midfielder has been impressed by the way Tottenham have juggled league and European commitments this term and is expecting a typically testing, exciting game against his old side at White Hart Lane. "I expect them to pose us a few problems – it's always tough when we go there, though it's normally a good football match too," the 29-year-old said. "They have some major threats in their team, particularly in wide areas with Gareth Bale and Aaron Lennon. [Luka] Modric has been in good form, as has [Rafael] van der Vaart, who has weighed in with a good few goals this season. "I think you have to say it's the best Spurs team we've seen for a while. They've gone into the Champions League and been very successful and they've managed to balance that with the league, whic

Manchester City on top of table...?? For Now...

Image
Premier League Roberto Mancini’s men made hard work of victory (City led 4-1 with 24 minutes to play) but now top the table by a point. The Reds’ superior goal difference, however, means any point gained at Tottenham on Sunday would send United back into pole position. Manchester City, who have played three more games than Sir Alex’s men, edged to the summit on Saturday with a 4-3 win over Wolves. Meanwhile, Arsenal beat West Ham 3-0 in the late kick-off to move to within a point of the Reds (the Gunners have played two games more). Elsewhere on Saturday, Chelsea won for only the second time in 10 league games. The Londoners required two second-half goals – both came from corners – to see off Blackburn Rovers and climb to fourth in the table. Stoke City beat Bolton 2-0, West Bromwich Albion left it late to beat Blackpool 3-2 in a thrilling game at The Hawthorns and Fulham clinched a late draw at Wigan.

Javier Hernandez

Image
Javier Hernandez Javier 'Chicharito' Hernandez completed his move to Old Trafford in July 2010, becoming United’s first Mexican player. The exciting young striker joined from hometown club Chivas de Guadalajara, for whom he had scored 29 goals in 79 games since making his debut as a teenager in 2006. Unusually for a club of United's stature, the transfer was conducted completely under the radar: only the player and his father were aware of the deal and there was no prior speculation in the media, either in the UK or Mexico. 'Chicharito' means ‘little pea’ and Hernandez attracted the moniker because he’s the son of Javier Hernandez, himself a top Mexican striker who played in the 1986 World Cup and was nicknamed 'Chicharo' ('pea') because of his green eyes. An out-and-out striker, Chicharito is quick, two-footed and strong in the air, qualities that have already seen him likened to Reds legend Ole Gunnar Solskjaer. He’s already m

Michael Carrick

Image
Michael Carrick Michael Carrick defied any critics of his £14m transfer from Tottenham by helping United to win the league in each of his first three seasons. In his debut 2006/07 campaign, he carved out a formidable partnership with Paul Scholes and began to mature into one of English football's most sophisticated and classy passing midfielders. Thereafter he confounded those who'd said he'd slip down the pecking order following Owen Hargreaves' summer 2007 arrival. The first of Carrick's title triumphs with United was also the first major honour of his professional career, although he did win the FA Youth Cup with West Ham in 1999,scoring twice in the 9-0 final demolition of Coventry City. West Ham loaned Carrick out to Swindon in 1999/2000 and then Birmingham in 2000/01 when he earned a nomination for the PFA Young Player of the Year, eventually won by Liverpool's Steven Gerrard. Carrick spent much of the 2002/03 seaso

Fabio

Image
Fabio Fabio da Silva is a right-footed, left-sided defender but, like his twin brother Rafael, loves to get forward. Spotted in 2005 by Les Kershaw, then United's Academy manager, while playing for Fluminense in a Hong Kong youth tournament, it wasn't long before the Reds came knocking. Fabio has already proved his potential on the youth international stage. He captained and top-scored in the Under-17 World Cup finals in Korea in 2007. FIFA's official website heaped praise on the teenager after their game against Ghana. "Brazil's calm and intricate build-up play was impressive to behold as the imperious Fabio pulled the strings." It's that kind of promise that had Sir Alex waxing lyrical about the pair. "It's a typical Brazilian situation," he says. "They just love playing. They're quick and they're determined. I think they're both excellent footballers, I really do." The United

Rafael

Image
Rafael Rafael was born in Petropolis, Rio de Janeiro, and is very much a modern full-back: he loves to bombard down the right flank - but he's not all just Brazilian flair, he's made of tough stuff. Rafael, who like his twin brother Fabio is a Brazilian youth international, was a somewhat surprise inclusion in the Reds' starting line-up at Peterborough on 4 August 2008 in Barry Fry's testimonial match. Talk about taking your chance when it comes. Sir Alex described the 18-year-old's performance as "a sensation". Finally, it was the end of one long journey from his former Brazilian club Fluminense, and the start of a new one with United. What made Rafael's debut all the more startling was that he hadn't played for over a year. The Reds had been waiting for international clearance on the pair's transfer from Brazil, so they had been unable to play for United during that time and, in fact, didn't play an

Chris Smalling

Image
Chris Smaling Little more than 18 months after arriving at Fulham from non-league Maidstone, defender Chris Smalling agreed to terms that would make him a Manchester United player from 1 July 2010. A quick, clever central defender, Smalling played cameo roles for Roy Hodgson’s Fulham in both domestic and European competitions during 2009/10. Those fleeting performances were enough to earn him call-ups at England Under-21 level, and catch the eye of United scouts who identified him as a talent too good to miss out on. The Reds agreed terms with Fulham for Smalling’s signature in January 2010, although the Greenwich-born defender remained at Craven Cottage for the remainder of the season. At the time, Sir Alex described Smalling as “an extremely talented young defender who we’ve been monitoring for some months”. “He’s very quick and reads the game well. He will be a great asset to the club, playing alongside some of the best defenders around and we’re delighted to hav

Darren Fletcher

Image
Darren Fletcher Darren Fletcher is a player for the big occasion. While other men might shirk from the responsibility presented to them in the heat of battle, the Scot thrives in such encounters. This attitude was never more visibly displayed than in the 4-0 thrashing of Arsenal [in February 2008] in which he headed two goals. He set the standard for the team with his indefatigable running, hassling, closing down and tackling which denied the Gunners time and space to play their usual passing game. “I enjoy the added pressure of the big games," admitted the midfielder, who scooped his second title medal in May 2008 and was an unusedsubstitute in the Champions League final in Moscow. "The atmosphere’s always special and the crowd spur you on.” In terms of recognition for his exertions and qualities, Fletcher's United career has been a slow burner. It is only with age, and with an ever-growing list of outstanding performances, that he

Bebe

Image
Bebe A “fairytale story” was how Sir Alex described the arrival of Tiago Manuel Dias Correia - better known as Bebe. After a few years plying his trade at Portuguese third division club Estrela Amadora, Bebe signed for Vitoria de Guimaraes in July 2010. A mere five weeks later he was putting pen to paper on a United contract. The Reds' agreement to sign the versatile forward from Guimaraes was announced on 4 August 2010 and he was unveiled the following week alongside fellow new signings Chris Smalling and Javier “Chicharito” Hernandez. A player with seemingly great potential was acquired by United without being viewed by Sir Alex. The boss admitted it was an impulse decision to sign the player, following advice from the club's scouts in Portugal and by former Reds' assistant manager Carlos Queiroz. A strong, powerful and technically-gifted attacking player, Bebe impressed on his first appearance for United Reserves - albeit in a 4-1 hom

Jonny Evans

Image
Jonny Evans Belfast-born Jonathan Evans is a tall and agile centre-back. An intelligent defender, he combines an uncompromising physical approach with the ability to pass the ball out from the back. Jonny has risen through the United ranks to become an integral part of the first team squad, with Sir Alex Ferguson admitting: "His United future is assured." The Northern Ireland international - who received his first call-up before he had even made his United debut - has blossomed into one of the most promising young defenders around. Ever since he was handed a Champions League squad number at the start of the 2005/06 season, aged just 17, Evans has been a burgeoning talent waiting to burst to prominence. Handed his opportunity by the sale of Gerard Pique in the summer of 2008, Jonny did that during the course of the 2008/09 campaign. Whenever called upon, Jonny's ice-cool calm is immediately apparent, even on huge stages like the San

Gabriel Obertan

Image
Gabriel Obertan United secured the signature of French starlet Gabriel Obertan on 8 July 2009, with the highly-rated forward/winger joining the Reds from Bordeaux following a four-year spell with Les Girondins. Prior to his arrival at Bordeaux, Obertan began his career with local club Paris-Pantin FC, before making the switch to Paris FC in 2002 and then Paris-Saint Germain. After spending a year at each, he moved to the famed Clairefontaine Academy in order to further his development, before being spotted by Bordeaux scouts. He joined Les Girondins in 2005 and spent his first year plying his trade in the reserves. After being offered a three-year professional contract in 2006, he was promoted to the first team at the start of the 2006/07 season and made his debut, aged 17, on 30 September 2006 against Valenciennes. He fired his first goal for the club on 22 April 2007, scoring the second in a 2-0 win over Saint-Étienne. By the end of the campaign

Anderson

Image
Anderson A nderson arrived with the billing: the ‘new Ronaldinho’. But upon his arrival at Old Trafford from FC Porto in summer 2007 most Reds were left asking: ‘Anderson who?’ After a wondrous debut season the Brazilian's talents are well known not just in Manchester, but around the world. The Ronaldinho comparisons are inevitable given both players began their careers at Brazilian side Gremio, who Anderson Luis de Abreu Oliveira (to give his full name) joined at the age of just five. But that’s really where the similarities end. Where Ronaldinho is all flicks and flamboyance, Anderson (or Ando as he is known to his team-mates) is bustling with energy and possesses an eye for a defence-splitting pass. He has skill and technical ability in abundance, but his preference for midfield combat could bring you to question his Brazilian roots (more so if you spotted his dancing after lifting the UEFA Champions League trophy in May 2008!) At Gremio

January 2011 players ins and outs from Old trafford

Image
U nited have been busy during the January transfer market, although all the deals, bar Danish goalkeeper Anders Lindegaard’s arrival, have involved players leaving Old Trafford. Ritchie De Laet became the latest temporary departure on Friday 14 January when his loan move to Portsmouth was confirmed by the South Coast club. The young Belgian will remain at Fratton Park until the end of the 2010/11 season. Earlier in the day, Corry Evans moved to Hull City on another loan deal that runs out at the end of the season. The KC Stadium is a popular destination for United players at the moment: Cameron Stewart is already on loan there, while defender James Chester moved permanently earlier this month. Magnus Eikrem has also departed Old Trafford. The young midfielder signed a permanent deal with Molde FK, now managed by Ole Gunnar Solksjaer, and was unveiled at a press conference in Norway on Wednesday 12 January. Elsewhere, striker Federico Macheda has joined Italian club Sampdoria u

Manchester United Trio should return from injury

Image
Van Der Sar - W.Rooney - N.Vidi c U nited are expected to be boosted by the return of three key players for Sunday's trip to Tottenham. Wayne Rooney, Nemanja Vidic and Edwin van der Sar missed last weekend's FA Cup win over Liverpool, but should be available for the visit to White Hart Lane. "Wayne and Nemanja have both trained well this week and should be fit for Sunday. Edwin is a little bit behind them, but he should train today and I think he'll be okay," revealed Sir Alex at his pre-match press conference. "We've got a good squad available for a really big game. Both teams have had a week's rest so it should be a really fantastic game." The Reds face arguably their toughest away trip of the campaign with Harry Redknapp's side one of five sides vying for the championship. "The development of Spurs is an interesting one because I can't remember, and I'm sure I'm right, ever taking United to the Lane with them

John O'Shea

Image
John O'shea Arguably United’s most versatile player, John O'Shea - who has made over 300 appearances - has played everywhere during his time at Old Trafford. But wherever he plays, United’s no.22 is happy to contribute to the team. What’s more, the Irishman signed a contract in November 2007 that will keep him at the club until 2012. He said of his new deal: “It has never crossed my mind to leave. Luckily the club wanted me to stay and it was sorted out quickly.” A shining example of selflessness and professionalism, John has been ever-willing in his service for United, ever since his first full season in 2002/03 when he was was a revelation at left-back. He raced up and down the wing, effortlessly picking the pockets of opponents who ran at him and cheekily nutmegging those who tried to stop him (remember Luis Figo?). O'Shea has always been a footballing defender, blessed with beautiful balance, crisp passing and formidable upper-bod

Patrice Evra

Image
Patrice Evra United beat off fierce competition from Liverpool, Arsenal and Inter Milan to secure the services of French full-back Patrice Evra on 10 January 2006. The defender's arrival, just days after Nemanja Vidic’s capture, signalled Sir Alex Ferguson's intention to shore up his defence, which had suffered in the long-term absence of Gabriel Heinze. Although only 24 when he joined the Reds, Evra had already been capped five times for France. He had been club captain at Monaco, where he established himself as a quick, committed, attack-minded player, also capable of playing at left-midfield. Evra started his career in Italy after a scout from Masala spotted him in Les Ulis, the same tough suburb of Paris where Thierry Henry grew up. After one season in Serie C1, he moved up to Serie B by joining Monza. In 2000, Nice brought him home to France and converted him from left-winger to left-back. After two seasons he was snapped up by Monaco

Tomasz Kuszczak

Image
Tomasz Kuszczak T omasz Kuszczak (pron. IPA: [ˈtɔmaʂ ˈkuʂtʂak], ) (born 20 March 1982 in Krosno Odrzańskie, Poland ) is a Polish football player, who is a goalkeeper with the Premiership club Manchester United and the Poland national football team. Kuszczak has previously played for Śląsk Wrocław in Poland, as well as for the German clubs KFC Uerdingen 05 and Hertha BSC Berlin, before moving in 2004 to England 's West Bromwich Albion . During the summer of 2006 he made the switch to Manchester United after a season of starting for West Brom in the Premiership. Kuszczak made 14 appearances for the Poland Under-21 side, and has been capped five times at the senior level. There aren't many tougher jobs at United than shadowing Edwin van der Sar. With one of the world's best ahead of you, chances are limited, which means grasping the opportunities that come your way is essential. By and large, Tomasz Kuszczak has done just that. Remember his Uni

Ji Sung Park

Image
Ji Sung Park J i Sung Park was born in Seoul and raised in Suwon outside South Korea ’s capital. Ji began his career as football player at age 11 and earned quite a few awards. These awards were remarkable for a student at elementary school and since then he continued playing football throughout high school in Suwon. His potential to make the leap from Asia to Europe was spotted by Guus Hiddink, who coached the South Korea during their successful run to the World Cup semi finals in 2002. Later that year, Park followed Hiddink to PSV. Ji earned widespread recognition in 2005 after scoring against Milan in the UEFA Champions League semi-finals, but he had gradually been building his reputation in Holland. Park played only a fleeting part in PSV’s title success in his first season in Holland. Two years later he had fully adapted to European football and was an integral component of the side that clinched Holland's League and Cup Double. Alerted to his blossoming

Nani

Image
Luis Nani L uís Carlos Almeida da Cunha (born 17 November 1986 in Praia, Cape Verde), better known as Nani, is a Portuguese footballer who currently plays for Manchester United and Portugal . His predominant position is as a winger. Portuguese Luís Carlos Almeida da Cunha (or ‘Nani’ as we all know him) is a powerful and pacy winger. He arrived at Old Trafford from Sporting Lisbon in 2007 and, predictably, was given the tag of being ‘the new Cristiano Ronaldo’. It was perhaps an unfair burden to carry given the heights Ronaldo scaled at United, not least because realistically they are quite different players. It was until Nani's countryman left for pastures new that he really began to fulfil his undoubted potential and stepped out of Ronaldo's shadow. The 2009/10 campaign, the season after United's former no.7 joined Real Madrid, was meant to be the moment Nani stepped to the fore. But his sporadic involvement, partly due to injury, in

Paul Scholes

Image
Paul Scholes P aul Aaron Scholes (born 16 November 1974) is an English football player who has spent his whole career at Manchester United . Scholes has been called the best midfielder of his generation, and was praised for his modesty and attitude towards the game. You must have a rare and special football talent to impress the great Sir Bobby Charlton. The United legend sums up Paul Scholes perfectly: "He’s always so in control and pinpoint accurate with his passing – a beautiful player to watch." Part of the new wave of talent that ushered in Beckham, Giggs, Butt and the Neville brothers in the mid-1990s, Salford-born Scholes scored twice on his debut in the League Cup at Port Vale in 1994/95 – and on his first league outing against Ipswich – and hasn't looked back. A host of golden seasons at Old Trafford include 1995/96’s Double-winning campaign, in which he covered admirably during Eric Cantona’s suspension, finishing second behind the Frenchman

Nemanja Vidic

Image
Nemanja Vidic Nemanja Vidić signed for Manchester United for a reported fee of around £7 million on January 5, 2006; two and a half years after Manchester United's reported interest in him. He was assigned the number 15 shirt and made his debut for Manchester United as a substitute for Ruud van Nistelrooy in the dying minutes of Manchester United's 2-1 win in the Carling Cup semi-final second leg against Blackburn Rovers on January 25, 2006. During the 2006-07 Premier league season, Vidić formed a partnership with Rio Ferdinand in the centre of defence, which has since become one of the most prominent partnerships in English football, and has become an established first team player. In his first full season playing for Manchester United he made 25 appearances in the Premier league and ended the season winning his first league medal. The Serbian began his career with boyhood club Red Star Belgrade, joining their youth programme at 14. His first-team debut didn&

Dimitar Berbatov

Image
Dimitar Berbatov B erbatov was born in Blagoevgrad, Bulgaria . His father was a professional footballer with local outfit Pirin Blagoevgrad, and his mother Margarita was a professional handball player. Dimitar Berbatov is a classy and complete centre-forward, pairing the ability to ruthlessly and regularly find the net inside the box with the aptitude to create moments of sheer magic outside it. Sir Alex likes players with plenty of charisma in the way they play, and the Bulgarian’s languid style is instantly recognisable on the field. It’s also an approach that has drawn comparisons with former United talisman Eric Cantona. Like the captivating Frenchman, Berbatov loves to entertain with the ball at his feet, and he also shares Cantona's happy knack for scoring important (often late) goals. Berbatov started out at Bulgarian side CSKA Sofia. He joined The Armymen aged 17, following in the footsteps of his father, Ivan, who also played for the club.He was

Ryan Giggs

Ryann Giggs R yan Giggs was born in Cardiff, S Wales, of UK on November 29th 1973. Giggs' father Danny Wilson, was a renowned Rugby League player, and his mother Lynne Giggs liked and supported her son’s talent greatly. Giggs born in Cardiff, was brought up in Pendlebury, England and thus got a Mancunian accent in his language. His father was of mixed race (of Sierra Leonean ancestry) and Giggs has always expressed pride at his mixed heritage. League Debut His League debut for Manchester United came on 2nd March 1991, against Everton at Old Trafford, as a substitute for Denis Irwin. The winger's first League start was at the Manchester derby at Old Trafford at the end of the same season, when he scored the only goal of the match. Giggs soon made the left-wing position his own despite fierce competition from Lee Sharpe. Ryan's early career was memorable for stunning goals against Spurs in 1993 and QPR in 1994. After winning the title in 1993, Giggs stepped up a level
