Gary Neville sat down for an exclusive interview with MUTV to talk about his decision to retire, and to look back on some of his best moments in his career. In the first of a three-part serialisation of that interview, Gary explains how he came to make his decision... You caught a lot of people by surprise, can you take us through the chain of events that led to your announcement? It wasn’t just on the day; something like that doesn’t come as immediately as that. It’s been a combination of events over the last few months and I’ve known for the last few weeks having spoken to the manager. You don’t go and do something like that so quickly. I went away for a week and still came to the same conclusion: it just felt like the right thing to do and that my time was up. When your time’s up, your time’s up. You could have played until the end of the season. Why stop mid-season? Sometimes you just go off gut instinct, it’s the type of person I am. I felt it was right....

Michael Carrick United’s unbeaten league run will be put on the line on Sunday against ‘the best Spurs team we’ve seen for a while’, according to Michael Carrick. The midfielder has been impressed by the way Tottenham have juggled league and European commitments this term and is expecting a typically testing, exciting game against his old side at White Hart Lane. "I expect them to pose us a few problems – it's always tough when we go there, though it's normally a good football match too," the 29-year-old said. Premier League Roberto Mancini’s men made hard work of victory (City led 4-1 with 24 minutes to play) but now top the table by a point. The Reds’ superior goal difference, however, means any point gained at Tottenham on Sunday would send United back into pole position. Manchester City, who have played three more games than Sir Alex’s men, edged to the summit on Saturday with a 4-3 win over Wolves. Meanwhile, Arsenal beat West Ham 3-0 in the late kick-off to move to within a point of the Reds (the Gunners have played two games more). Javier Hernandez Javier 'Chicharito' Hernandez completed his move to Old Trafford in July 2010, becoming United’s first Mexican player. The exciting young striker joined from hometown club Chivas de Guadalajara, for whom he had scored 29 goals in 79 games since making his debut as a teenager in 2006. Unusually for a club of United's stature, the transfer was conducted completely under the radar: only the player and his father were aware of the deal and there was no prior speculation in the media, either in the UK or Mexico. 'Chicharito' means ‘little pea’ and Hernandez attracted the moniker because he’s the son of Javier Hernandez, himself a top Mexican striker who played in the 1986 World Cup and was nicknamed 'Chicharo' ('pea') because of his green eyes. Michael Carrick Michael Carrick defied any critics of his £14m transfer from Tottenham by helping United to win the league in each of his first three seasons. In his debut 2006/07 campaign, he carved out a formidable partnership with Paul Scholes and began to mature into one of English football's most sophisticated and classy passing midfielders. Thereafter he confounded those who'd said he'd slip down the pecking order following Owen Hargreaves' summer 2007 arrival. The first of Carrick's title triumphs with United was also the first major honour of his professional career, although he did win the FA Youth Cup with West Ham in 1999,scoring twice in the 9-0 final demolition of Coventry City. Fabio Fabio da Silva is a right-footed, left-sided defender but, like his twin brother Rafael, loves to get forward. Spotted in 2005 by Les Kershaw, then United's Academy manager, while playing for Fluminense in a Hong Kong youth tournament, it wasn't long before the Reds came knocking. Fabio has already proved his potential on the youth international stage. He captained and top-scored in the Under-17 World Cup finals in Korea in 2007. FIFA's official website heaped praise on the teenager after their game against Ghana. "Brazil's calm and intricate build-up play was impressive to behold as the imperious Fabio pulled the strings." Rafael Rafael was born in Petropolis, Rio de Janeiro, and is very much a modern full-back: he loves to bombard down the right flank - but he's not all just Brazilian flair, he's made of tough stuff. Rafael, who like his twin brother Fabio is a Brazilian youth international, was a somewhat surprise inclusion in the Reds' starting line-up at Peterborough on 4 August 2008 in Barry Fry's testimonial match. Chris Smaling Little more than 18 months after arriving at Fulham from non-league Maidstone, defender Chris Smalling agreed to terms that would make him a Manchester United player from 1 July 2010. A quick, clever central defender, Smalling played cameo roles for Roy Hodgson’s Fulham in both domestic and European competitions during 2009/10. Those fleeting performances were enough to earn him call-ups at England Under-21 level, and catch the eye of United scouts who identified him as a talent too good to miss out on. Bebe A “fairytale story” was how Sir Alex described the arrival of Tiago Manuel Dias Correia - better known as Bebe. After a few years plying his trade at Portuguese third division club Estrela Amadora, Bebe signed for Vitoria de Guimaraes in July 2010. A mere five weeks later he was putting pen to paper on a United contract. The Reds' agreement to sign the versatile forward from Guimaraes was announced on 4 August 2010 and he was unveiled the following week alongside fellow new signings Chris Smalling and Javier “Chicharito” Hernandez. Gabriel Obertan United secured the signature of French starlet Gabriel Obertan on 8 July 2009, with the highly-rated forward/winger joining the Reds from Bordeaux following a four-year spell with Les Girondins. Prior to his arrival at Bordeaux, Obertan began his career with local club Paris-Pantin FC, before making the switch to Paris FC in 2002 and then Paris-Saint Germain. After spending a year at each, he moved to the famed Clairefontaine Academy in order to further his development, before being spotted by Bordeaux scouts.
