Gary Neville sat down for an exclusive interview with MUTV to talk about his decision to retire, and to look back on some of his best moments in his career. In the first of a three-part serialisation of that interview, Gary explains how he came to make his decision... You caught a lot of people by surprise, can you take us through the chain of events that led to your announcement? It wasn’t just on the day; something like that doesn’t come as immediately as that. It’s been a combination of events over the last few months and I’ve known for the last few weeks having spoken to the manager. You don’t go and do something like that so quickly. I went away for a week and still came to the same conclusion: it just felt like the right thing to do and that my time was up. When your time’s up, your time’s up. You could have played until the end of the season. Why stop mid-season? Sometimes you just go off gut instinct, it’s the type of person I am. I felt it was right.

Manchester United squeeze past Southampton 'Ferguson praises Chicarito'

Chicharito drew special praise from Sir Alex Ferguson after booking Manchester United's place in the fifth round of the FA Cup with a trademark finish to sink a plucky Southampton. Behind at the break to a thumping Richard Chaplow drive, United silenced the St Mary’s crowd in the second half with goals from Michael Owen and the Mexican youngster. Hernandez helped dig United out of hole at Bloomfield Road on Tuesday and rounded his week off by grabbing a first ever FA Cup goal 14 minutes from time. Ferguson told MUTV : "He's only had one chance and he's scored - one chance, one goal is a tremendous ratio. "He has great feet in and around the box and gets his shots away quickly with hardly any backlift.” The 22-year-old has now scored four goals in just six games and offers the side more than just goals according to his manager. But in late stage of the game, javier hernandez and michael owen produce the killer touch after Sir Alex bring in Nani and the far most experience Ryan giggs. Ferguson said: ' Owen was terrific , - he showed a lot of composure to score. With Hernandez it's one chance, one goal. His work-rate is fantastic, he's always on the move. Sometimes we don't find enough space for him. 'He's scored in every competition, he's got great feet, he has shots, hopefully he will continue to improve. I'm sure he will.'  “You need to be honest,” Evra told MUTV. “It was a good point because Tottenham played very well. It’s not easy to come to Tottenham and win so I think this is a good point. Although Patrice Evra insists United went to White Hart Lane to win, the Frenchman was pleased to leave with a point. The Reds and Tottenham Hotspur played out an entertaining 0-0 draw on Sunday afternoon, with the home side creating more chances but United creating the better ones. Twice Heurelho Gomes was forced into full-length saves from Wayne Rooney shots, while Edwin van der Sar barely broke sweat at the other end. But while Spurs struggled to make an impact in the final third, they bossed the midfield for long periods and generally looked the most likely side to score.
